Did not see the it was the mormons the whole time twist, and while I agree overall with your stance on not wanting to cast aspersions on mormons when each person finds their own faith and joy and all that, as an ex-mormon there's something you don't quite understand, the institution of the church of latter day saints is core to the faith of mormons, there isn't a way to split the harm caused by the church from the people, becuase it's compulsory within the faith to give a percentage of your income to the church, and even beyond that it's expected for members of the church to do all the janitorial work, administrative work, Sunday school, preaching and just about every part of the churches operation as unpaid volunteer work, so ultimately the wider organization pockets immense amounts of every members money and uses it exclusively to lobby, and buy real estate and generally exercise power however it wants. As such it's necessary to consider that the person even while friendly is directly causing the harm the organization is doing

I think the story criticisms are fine but going down the road of trying to logic everything out seems unnecessary. Sure, it might not all be the most logically thought out, but the movie is clearly supposed to be over the top and ridiculous in a similar way Rocky Horror is, if you "logicked" out Rocky Horror it would probably seem ridiculous too but that's kinda the point. Not that Repo is as good as Rocky Horror of course, I still love it tho. As for Terrance being a bad bf, it has no effect on my love of his work, if he's a shitty bf, that sucks and I would prefer if he weren't but I'm not dating him so I don't care, I can enjoy his work, if he's a creep that also sucks but again won't have any affect on my love of his work. I don't expect people that create things to be amazing or perfect or nice, they could be assholes, but it doesn't matter because I'm not friends with them, they're not in my life, I'm just interacting with what they create. Also, a lot of those jokes were made in a different time tbf, like those mid 00's times had a lot of edgy jokes, like pedobear was a popular meme for example. A pedophile bear, so the white van joke wasn't too shocking to me or stuff like that. The only situation I won't separate the art from the artist is in extreme cases, like the mangaka for Rouruni Kenshin, arrested in Japan for child pornography, he paid a fine and that was it. I know he's good as far as Japan's legal system is concerned, but I'm not supporting a pedophile that had CP by buying his stuff.

I have never seen Repo, but I LOVE the Zydrate song. My personal interpretation from the song, and what I assumed to be the plot of the movie it was from, was a dystopian Cyberpunk future where the wealthy are able to afford safe and sterile body modifications, but the poor/underclass were forced to seek these out through more shady means. I thought Zydrate was an illegal drug secretly manufactured by Geneco specifically sold to and utilized by back-alley surgeons (Like ones who lost their licenses, or want to make extra money on the side) that was equally an opioid and aphrodisiac with a high so powerful that patients would continue to agree to shady experimental surgeries in order to have access to their drug-induced sexualized high, that there was no market for the drug alone, that you had to consent to body modification in order to get it. I thought "The Repo Man" represented a class of people who secretly worked for Geneco/ shady surgeons to forcibly repossess organs (Which may or may not lead to patient death, like ripping out a patient's eyes when she misses a payment on them) and the Graverobber represented the lowest class of people, who would directly collect body parts from the recently deceased even from fresh graves in order to be sold to illegal surgeons on the black market. I didn't think of the Repo Man and Graverobber as individual characters, but representations of certain archetypes in the society being portrayed. I think I like my idea better than the plot of the real movie 😅

I guess I didn't have as many issues with Repo as you did. THOUGH, being the first video I've seen of yours, must say, amazing analysis and editorial insight. I've rewatched this video a number of times, and it got me to go through a ton of your other videos. I'm so glad I found you! You remind me a lot of Lindsay Ellis in the best ways. Also, I finally started reading again thanks to getting a library card and audiobooks on Libby. I've been using your recommendations as a jumping off point! I do have a Riley Sager novel in my queue though (The Only One Left). We'll see how it is. I'm very excited to get to My Heart Is a Chainsaw once my months-long hold comes through. So far, my favorites in the Personal Noir genre have been Gone Girl (duh), Rock, Paper, Scissors, and The Woman in the Window. Wow the counsel of crowns is just like mormonism! Women frivolous, men speak important words. Violent stories were pretty staple within growing up mormon. Joseph Smiths wife was nothing but good to him while he coerced women and girls into sexual relationships. Thats what mormon women are for. Speaking in support of men and making children. That whole remark about feeling scared because of being conditioned to be so was surprisingly relatable. I'm a trans woman in the US and I get really scared walking alone at night. Nothing has happened to me specifically, but just based on things I see on the news and pop culture, I get really scared.
